Review by Leo Hartas

The Night Tripper is a masterpiece of psychedelic R&B and voodoo funk, showcasing the unique musical vision and mystical persona of Dr. John. Released in 1971, this album immerses the listener in a swampy, surrealistic world of New Orleans hoodoo, with its hypnotic rhythms, eerie chants, and otherworldly textures.

From the opening track, "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya," Dr. John establishes his credentials as a master of the macabre and the magical, blending blues, jazz, and African rhythms into a potent brew of musical mojo. His gravelly voice, punctuated by guttural growls and cackles, adds to the otherworldly atmosphere, conjuring up images of swamp monsters, voodoo queens, and midnight rituals.

Throughout the album, Dr. John's band, The Night Trippers, provides a tight and funky backdrop for his mystical musings, with tight horn arrangements, groovy bass lines, and slinky guitar riffs. The songs range from the funky strut of "Mama Roux" to the dreamy balladry of "I Walk on Guilded Splinters," with its haunting piano chords and ghostly vocals.

  • Malcolm Rebenneck as Dr. John, the Night Tripper has demonstrated an amazingly high degree of funkmanship as the third generation son of the Second Line, the light New Orleans rhumba rhythm that defined in popular music initially by Roy 'Professor Longhair' Byrd, Huey 'Piano' Smith, and later refined for even greater mass acceptance by Antoine 'Fats' Domino.
  • Dr. John no longer resides in New Orleans and currently devotes most of his energies to behind the scene projects in California, such as producing Van Morrison. The selections here, however, are down home NOLA as red beans and rice. And they are all original from Malcolm Rebenneck. Hot as fiyo on the bayou from the Man with the Plan from the Gitgo.

Malcolm John Rebennack (born November 20, 1941, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA died June 6, 2019), better known by his stage name Dr. John, was an American singer and songwriter. His music combines blues, pop, jazz, boogie woogie and rock and roll. Rebennack began playing the piano at the age of six and, as he grew up, he became strongly influenced by the style of (aka Professor Longhair). He immersed himself in the music and voodoo cultures of New Orleans, where he became known as , playing the organ in strip-clubs with 'make-up' bands in the French Quarter. However, it was as a session guitarist with 's Ace Records that gave him his first break, around 1957. He worked with the New Orleans R&B session crew at Crescent City's '' studio and with an 'All For One' co-operative formed by - cutting "Storm Warning" (Rex, 1957) and singles on Ace, Rex and AFO (an acronym of All For One) . Rebennack then moved to California in 1962 with Battiste's crew, where they played on 's final recording session. Rebennack subsequently undertook a lot of session work around LA (appearing briefly for a "Freak Out!" album session with ) and developed his 'Mardi Gras' persona of "Dr. John Creaux, The Night Tripper" with Battiste's help, assembling the "Gris-Gris" album whilst sessioning for . His drawled and ponderous style, tinged with a husky Southern Comfort delivery, caught the mood of the moment upon the album's release in 1968 giving him the commercial freedom to explore the many facets of the Louisiana blues and Memphis funk cultures in following releases. His recordings have been supported by such alumni as Clapton, Jagger, Allen Toussaint, The Meters, Jerry Wexler and Mike Bloomfield. He had a top-ten hit with "Right Place, Wrong Time
