Review by Simon Kindlen

Van Morrison's album A Period of Transition is a remarkable work of art that showcases his versatility as a musician. The album, released in 1977, marks a transitional period in Morrison's career, as he moved away from his signature blend of soul and R&B and ventured into a more experimental sound.

The album opens with "You Gotta Make It Through the World," a bluesy track that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Morrison's voice is as soulful as ever, and his lyrics are filled with wisdom and insight. The album's title track, "A Period of Transition," features a funky groove and a horn section that adds depth and texture to the song.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Flamingos Fly," a hauntingly beautiful ballad that showcases Morrison's poetic side. The song's lyrics are filled with vivid imagery, and Morrison's voice is filled with emotion and longing.

A short and sweet album that opens and closes with two excellent songs! In between those, there is the superb "Heavy Connection", and the fine "Joyous Sound" and "Flamingos Fly". A transitional album indeed; with one foot in his coming rejuvenation.

I like the New Orleans groove (Dr. Johns production) and the singing is good, too. Its a bit repetitive sometimes, but a solid record. Compared to "weaker" albums from other great artists (Dylan, Reed, Bowie etc.) this is a consistent effort.

Such a talented man who just continues to blow me away. Van has a powerful voice, lyrics that are deep with emotion and spirituality and surrounds himself with talented musicians. Been a while since I listened to this beautiful and rarely talked about album. Thanks for posting this jewel.
